Persecutions came after persecutions: wars, struggles, and stoning. All these were no less than performing miracles and they became famous and they were prepared for a great joy. The book did not say that the apostles returned with joy because they performed miracles, but rather said that they rejoiced that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His. (Acts 5:41). This is what they learned from Christ, Who said "Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subjected to you" (Luke 10:20). The true joy that can't be faked is to suffer for Christ"
